Disability Imagery:

A Teaching Guide to Disability and Moving Image Media

Exploring disability through moving image media There is growing inclusion in UK schools, meaning that disabled children and students expect, and are expected, to take part fully in the curriculum and social life of mainstream schools. There are increasing numbers of disabled children in every class who need to see themselves reflected positively, both in the curriculum and the moving image media around them. During the European Year of Disabled People 2003, the British Film Institute, in partnership with Disability Equality in Education, developed an educational resource pack, supported by in-service training for teachers and cinema-based events for primary and secondary pupils. This project supports teachers of Citizenship and PSHE, working with students from age 9 to 16 years. It also links with other curriculum subjects include History, English and Media Studies.

The Resource   A DVD compilation of short films and film extracts, plus teaching guide which outlines key issues relating to disability and indicates ways of exploring the representation of disability in moving image media. The short films include: - Alison's Baby - Better or Worse? - Cousin - Black Dog - Raspberry Ripple Awards - Sixth Happiness - Rhythm of Survival - Gallivant - Arko Ujyalo (Another Light) - See the Person, not the Disability - Together - Blind Sensation - Tell It like It is - The Chapeau Roan - The Egg.

The website provides a wealth of information on how disability has been represented in moving image from the earliest days. The approach is from a disability equality and human rights perspective, which draws on the collective thinking of the Disabled People's Movement.

Therefore, whether you are experienced in Media Studies/English teaching and/or have some understanding of disability issues, it's important to read the Introduction and Ways of thinking about disability before moving on to look at the film and teaching sections.
